Sustainable Olympics - Oxymoron or Reality?

Sustainable Olympics - Oxymoron or Reality?

There is no doubt that the 2012 Olympics in London will become the English sporting event of the decade. Partly as marketing push, partly as serious attempt to lead technology, organisers proudly claim that it will be the most sustainable olympics ever held. What is behind this claim and can mega events such as the Olympic Games ever be "sustainable"?

What type of Tennis Equipment do you need?

Are you a tennis player? Are you interested in learning the game? If you answered yes to either of these questions you need to learn as much as you can about tennis equipment. Most importantly, find out what you need and where you can buy it. Once you know where to purchase tennis equipment you should be able to get exactly what you want, without delay.

Barefoot Running: Thoughts on My First Barefoot Run

Barefoot Running: Thoughts on My First Barefoot Run

I'll start this post by saying that I'm a firm believer in the value and benefits, both mental and physical, of minimalist running. I run mostly in lightweight trainers (<10oz, currently the Brooks Launch), racing flats (currently the Brooks Green Silence), and the Vibram Fivefingers.

Brooks Running Pure Project

Brooks Running Pure Project

I was just alerted yesterday to a new post on the Brooks Running blog where they announced their plans to jump into the minimalist shoe market with a collection called the PureProject (thanks @ZakBranigan!). Lake Placid, N.Y., hosted a parade Friday for Olympic medalist Andrew Weibrecht. The Dartmouth College student won the bronze in the men's downhill. The parade in his honor started at the Olympic complex and went down Main Street. Weibrecht rode atop a fire truck with his siblings. Hundreds lined the streets in a snow squall to catch a glimpse of the hometown hero.

Review of SportTracks for Garmin Forerunner GPS Watches

I'm a huge fan of the Garmin Forerunner GPS watches (see my review of the Garmin Forerunner 205/305 here), and I get a lot of questions about how I access and manage data collected by these devices. I made a decision early on based upon research done on-line to use a program called SportTracks instead of the software that comes packaged with the Garmin devices.

Dealing with Athletes Foot

Dealing with Athletes Foot

Athlete's foot can be a very irritating - not to mention painful - condition. It's something that is generally picked up in warm and moist conditions that are generally present in pool areas, bathrooms and yes - locker rooms. However, athlete's foot can also be picked up via growth of the fungus in sweaty footwear including thermal socks, sneakers and insulated boots.

The Right Sources of Nutrition for Athletes

Nutrition for athletes may have a slightly different diet compared to the diet required by an ordinary non-athletic person. Athletes need an extra source of energy because of the kind of activities that they need to do. They need to condition themselves to be able to reach the full level of their winning performance. This is why equipping themselves with proper nutrients is very important.

Positive Coaching Words to Motivate Athletes

Motivating athletes is one of the challenges of sports parents and sport coaches. Observing seemingly unmotivated athletes can be very frustrating for adults, especially when dealing with athletes who show a real talent for a sport. To my knowledge, there are no tried and true solutions to motivating these type athletes, but there are many things that parents and coaches can try.
