Fast Start For Michigan Wolverines
The junior co-captain of the Michigan women's track and field team, Tiffany Ofili, never expected to be able to set any personal records at the Kentucky Invitational. Her coach, James Henry, on the other hand, had faith in his student and did exactly what was expected of her.
Ofili finished third place in the 200-meter event, at 24.32 seconds and had tied her best time in the 60-m hurdles (8.05 secs), and finishing second.
Though she won only third and second place, there are other Michigan juniors who won the events, including Nicole Edwards in the 3,000 meter run (9:24.12), Betty Wade in the high jump (5-8), and Casey Taylor in the long jump (19-0). This awesome performance is a testament to the hard practices the team have undergone, which really added to their strength.
The Michigan team also hired a new weight training coach to their training rosters, named Nicole Forrester, and reports say that she had been working the team very hard in the past seasons.
Despite the invitational remaining unscored, it gave the team a wonderful opportunity to assess their talents and performance in the pre-season training.
The Freshmen also contributed plenty and gave impresive performances. Emily Pendleton for example, came in second in the discus throw. Ofili stated that the freshman team is inspired enough to pursue greater heights.
One of the pivotal factors that led to the group's closeness is the death of teammate Joi Smith, an unfortunate occurrence that moved the group to adjust to their roles quickly. The whole team hopes to utilize the bond created over their comrade's death and turn it into inspiration to succeed on the track.
