Kibet Survives Second Attempt At His Life

Just this afternoon, World Marathon champion Luke Kibet had survived an attempt on his life in Kenya-- for the second time in just under two months. The trauma involved in this attack comes as a truly tragic blow, especially when Kibet is just recovering from the first assault and finally going back to some semblance of a normal life.

This incident happened during 4 pm, February 13, 2008 in Kinungi, Naivasha district, which is 60 km from the Kenyan capital Nairobi. Incidentally, this is an area most affected by the second wave of ethnic clashes.

Kibet was driving from Eldoret in the company of four other athletes. They came across a herd of sheep which were suspiciously placed in the middle of the road to slow down drivers, and when they braked, 6 men came over demanding to make the driver pay for “killing” their sheep.

The men screamed in Kiswahili and Kikuyu, threatening to set the car on fire. Kibet, at this point, couldn't take it anymore and drew out a gun he kept for self protection. This enabled him to buy enough time to drive away and escape.

Now, Kibet and his passengers are safe in Nairobi, and are heading to the Prisons Services XC Training camp.
