Asafa Powell Pulled Out of Sydney Grand Prix Due to Cut on Knee
Asafa Powell, the world record holder for the 100 meter sprint pulled out of Saturday's Sydney Grand Prix meeting due to a cut on his left knee. He got the cut when he fell on the stairs at his home in Kingston Jamaica just hours before leaving Australia. The cut required four stitches to heal.
Powell had been late for practice and was rushing upstairs when the unfortunate happened and he fell. His bulk as well as the pressure on his knee led to the gash that rendered him unable to run in the Sydney Grand Prix. However, despite this minor setback, he still had hopes of running in the Melbourne Track Classic on Thursday week.
It was shaping up to be an unlucky week for Powell when he arrived in Melbourne 24 hours later than scheduled. This was because of unforeseen delays in leaving hi s home in Kingston, which made him arrive in Miami too late to get him his connecting flight in LA. He was then forced to spend the night in Fort Lauderdale because there was no available accommodation in Miami. When he finally arrived in Melbourne, his bags being nowhere to be found. He was then required to wait in customs for two hours while attempts to find his possessions ensued. They later found out that there was a baggage mix-up with the flight from Los Angeles.
However, despite these unfortunate circumstances, Powell was still looking forward to his stay in Australia, as he wanted to kick off his Beijing Olympic preparations in Australia because of the many good memories he had of his last trip to it.
