New Facilities Inspire UAA Track and Field Team
The Seawolves Athletics was never known for having outstanding facilities. Far from it really, as most of its teams share practice areas with other teams of different sports, some even deigning to practice outside the school area. The hockey team for example, practices in a multi-tenant practice rink in-campus, and a multi-use, multi-tenant arena off campus. The volleyball and basketball teams share practice grounds in the gymnasium.
However, when it comes to the having the worst training facilities nothing can beat the track and field team. For several decades running, the Seawolves track and field team have been training only on treadmills directly next to the hockey rink and gymnasium in Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
It is truly a lamentable situation, especially when compared to other teams of other universities. The team had done everything-- put holes in the wall, made dents on the floor threw out tarps, and basically knocking everything down, all because they didn't have the facilities to train.
This is why it came to no small amount of delight and relief when the team practiced for the first time in the Dome in south Anchorage. So far, it is the only full size indoor 400-meter track in the continent, and the UAA team is beside themselves to now have access to a training facility that is truly meant for track and field.
The facility just saved the track and field program. Any longer, and the team will truly suffer in terms of training deficits. A lot of sports experts will definitely attribute to facilities being key factors in a team's success, as it attracts not only top athletes but also more business to a university.
